Editing documents quickly and easily is part of our daily work. That's why we want to provide you with supporting functions. To make it as easy as possible to edit different documents, we have developed the local editing function.
Range of functions
The local editing function makes it easy to edit files from d.velop documents using local applications. It doesn't matter what type of file it is, as long as there is a local application available for editing that file type. Clicking on Edit locally starts local editing for the current document.
A dialog box opens in which you can select the program to be used for local editing.
The document is then opened in the local application and can be edited there. Changes are automatically saved in d.velop documents.
Configuration and installation
To use local edit as a context action in documents, the function must be activated in the configuration by your administration. The local edit function is disabled by default.
You can find the function on your dashboard under Configuration > Administration > Local file editing.
In order for users to be able to use the local editing function, you need the local edit client as a locally installed application. For more information, see the configuration page for activating local editing under Learn more or in the d.velop service portal at d.velop local edit.
You can also download the client setup using the d.velop software manager.
New features in local edit
In previous versions, we have worked on the accessibility of the function, fixed bugs, and significantly improved the user experience.
Here is an overview of the most important points:
- eTag check to avoid duplicate editing (from version 1.5.0)
- Check whether local edit is installed and, if not, notify the user (from version 1.6.0)
- New configuration parameters to prevent problems with file names (from version 1.6.1)
- Always display context action and automatically transfer document to editing (from Current 2025.Q3)
- Avoidance of the login dialog within local edit (from version 1.7.0)
Licensing
We have included local editing in the product standard of d.velop documents.
The function will be available in the following sales products:
- d.velop documents business (or higher)
- d.velop documents platform edition business (or higher)
- d.velop documents platform edition public sector business (or higher)
- d.velop documents on premises
This applies to both new and existing customers. However, there is no blanket provision for customers who still use d.3ecm user licenses.
With this feature, we want to enable users to edit documents even more productively.
Please feel free to send us your feedback on the usability of this feature to ux-bugs@d-velop.de.
